The Black Media, Culture & Mind Lab, we explore the nuanced intersections of Black identity, media representation, cultural expression, and psychological experience within digital landscapes. Our research is rooted in the fields of Black psychology, Black studies, digital studies, and technology studies.

Our Mission
Our mission is to conduct rigorous, culturally-informed research that sheds light on the experiences of Black individuals in digital and media contexts. We aim to produce knowledge that not only advances academic discourse but also serves the Black community by informing policy, guiding the development of more inclusive technologies, and fostering a deeper understanding of Black cultural expressions.

Our Research Focus
The lab currently spearheads two pivotal research projects:
-
Dating Under the White Gaze: An Examination of Black Women's Online Dating Experiences This project addresses the systemic disparities Black women face in online dating, influenced by white supremacy culture, digital inequalities, and controlling images. Through this research, we aim to deconstruct the stereotypes and barriers Black women encounter and offer insights that could lead to more equitable digital dating environments.
-
What is The ‘Black’ in Black Digital Culture? Inspired by Stuart Hall's inquiry into Black popular culture, this project extends the conversation into the digital realm. We investigate the characteristics of Black digital culture, examining how Black identity and experiences are both represented and shaped within digital spaces, and how they contribute to the broader narrative of Black life in the diaspora.

Our Approach
We employ a variety of research methods, including qualitative interviews, surveys, and literature reviews, to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the topics at hand. Our lab is a collaborative space where students, scholars, and community members come together to contribute to research that matters.

Join Our Team
We are always on the lookout for motivated individuals who share our passion for these subjects. Whether you are a student looking to gain research experience, a scholar interested in contributing to our projects, or a community member who wants to support our mission, we welcome your involvement.
